Each of the horsemen reflects a separate environmental concern in a landscape. The imagery is highly symbolic, referencing the modern and medieval. Outside of the four horsemen painting are four smaller paintings. They show an interpretation of the four living creatures in Revelation that herald the horsemen. The oil paint on birch panel format connects to the altarpiece tradition in Christian art from the Northern Renaissance.
