Anne Newman is a painter and illustrator working in Omaha, Nebraska. She was raised in an artistic and book-loving home that engendered a love of story and illustration very early. She graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a BFA in Studio Art in 2021. In her home studio, she uses watercolor, pen, ink, and oil paint to create naturalistic, but darkly whimsical work. Her style is highly detailed and polished with richly saturated colors in oils or thickly cross-hatched pen over watercolor on paper. Outside of the studio, Newman is a sign maker and muralist.
Anne Newman’s work is imaginative and fantastical with a focus on folklore, myth, and anthropomorphism. Since she was very little, she has loved listening to stories and letting her mind create images. She still loves to listen to fantasy, but she also illustrates the stories she tells herself about the universe, the natural world, and its spiritual meaning. She takes a naturalistic and observed approach to drawing while adding invented elements. She is highly inspired by Golden Age illustration, Northern Renaissance panel painting, and natural history illustrations of the 18th and 19th centuries.
